Dragon Age II is a third-person RPG that serves as the sequel to the highly acclaimed Dragon Age: Origins from 2009. Viewed as a spiritual successor to the Baldur's Gate series, this installment was once again developed by BioWare, the creators of both franchises. The game takes players back to the dark fantasy world inhabited by humans, elves, and dwarves, which is now plagued by new challenges. This time, players assume the role of Hawke, a penniless refugee who rises to play a pivotal role in the world's future and is remembered as the Champion of Kirkwall. The storyline spans a decade of Hawke's life, during which he gathers dangerous allies, earns fame, and amasses wealth. The entire narrative is presented in retrospect, with the events having already transpired, and players taking on the role of a listener captivated by the tales told by various narrators, each offering different perspectives and opinions on the events.

Significant changes were made to the approach regarding the main character. While the previous game allowed players to choose from multiple races when creating their character, Dragon Age II restricts players to a human character, despite the world being populated by elves and dwarves. This lack of choice is compensated by giving the protagonist a defined personality, which can be further shaped by the player's decisions throughout the game. The three familiar classes from the original—warrior, rogue, and mage—return, but this time they are distinctly different from each other. Depending on the chosen class, players can feel like a killing machine, a medieval ninja, or a mobile artillery unit. Throughout the adventure, players develop their character, complete quests, and participate in significant events. As in the original, the fate of both the protagonist and the entire world is shaped by the player's decisions.
