Elden Ring: The main storyline in Elden Ring is loosely outlined, and the player must progress through stages of the adventure to gradually piece together fragments of information that will ultimately form a cohesive whole. The game's action takes place in a land known as The Lands Between, divided into six kingdoms. Each kingdom is ruled by one of the demigods, whom the player must defeat to reclaim fragments of the titular Elden Ring. The shattering of this mysterious object initiated a cataclysm that brought The Lands Between to the brink of collapse.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is a significant expansion for the action RPG game Elden Ring from 2022. This DLC introduces the "Path of Miquella," leading to the Land of Shadow, ruled by Messmer the Sootfinger. The action of Shadow of the Erdtree takes the player beyond the familiar Lands Between from Elden Ring, into the Land of Shadow, a place directly connected to death, shrouded by the ultimate goal of the Golden Tree, "purified in a forgotten battle" and "burned by Messmer's fire". It was here that the goddess Marika first set foot upon leaving her homeland, the world of Numens. Miquella, the demigod condemned to eternal childhood and son of Marika and Radagon, and brother of Malenia, also journeyed to this area hidden under a massive veil. His presence permeates the Lands Between, even though his spirit has left this realm.
