Arma III is set in the near future, where Europe becomes the last stronghold for NATO forces weakened by years of intense warfare in the Middle East. The leadership of the opposing Pact sees an opportunity to turn the tide with a desperate mission deep behind enemy lines. A small island in the Mediterranean Sea holds a military secret that could be crucial to the outcome of the conflict. Special forces soldiers and researchers are sent in for Operation "Magnitude". 

The Czech developers also catered to fans of multiplayer battles. Dedicated servers (separately for Windows and Linux systems) allow for competitive and cooperative gameplay. The game developers aimed to give players as much freedom as possible, reflected in rich customization options for uniforms and weapons. Compared to previous installments, Arma III offers a wider range of weapons and vehicles. Players can pilot various aircraft, helicopters, wheeled vehicles, and even ships.
