Players follow the story of the protagonist, the child of a Roman nobleman who was murdered by a political rival. The ultimate goal is to return home, reclaim the lost inheritance, and exact revenge. However, the path to this goal varies depending on the player's decisions, allowing for a non-linear narrative where the protagonist can become either a respected or feared commander.

The gameplay begins with the creation of the protagonist. Interestingly, players only decide the character's gender and appearance at the start; their class is chosen after completing the tutorial, where they get a chance to familiarize themselves with the capabilities of each of the four available classes.
