The main character of the campaign in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is Edward Kenway, the grandfather of Connor Kenway from Assassin's Creed III. Edward is an 18th-century pirate from Wales who, posing as a member of the titular order, learns about the existence of the legendary Observatory, which allows one to monitor the activities of any person on earth. Driven by the prospect of profit, the corsair decides to seize the secrets of the Observatory for himself, entangling himself in the age-old conflict between the Templars and the Assassins.

The setting of the game is the Caribbean a year after the end of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), during the so-called Golden Age of Piracy. As in previous games in the series, the developers have woven many real historical events and characters into the storyline. Players can encounter figures such as Edward Teach (Blackbeard), Benjamin Hornigold, Calico Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, and Charles Vane.
