The game takes players to the northwestern coast of the United States, specifically to the town of Bright Falls in Washington state. This seemingly idyllic town is rocked by a series of ritualistic murders, prompting the FBI to send in Saga Anderson, a profiler known for solving difficult cases. Upon her arrival, Saga discovers pages from a horror story that appear to influence the reality around her. The author of these pages is Alan Wake, a writer who was officially declared missing in 2010. For the past thirteen years, Wake has been trapped in the Dark Place, struggling to maintain his sanity while searching for a way to escape his imprisonment.
