Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the third installment in the cyberpunk-themed action RPG series, originally launched in 2000 by Ion Storm under the direction of Warren Spector. This installment, however, was developed by Eidos Montreal, who took on the task of reviving the franchise. The game serves as a prequel to the previous entries and was created in collaboration with Sheldon Pacotti, the writer of the earlier installments, as well as receiving input from original creators Harvey Smith and Warren Spector.

Set in the year 2027 in Detroit, Deus Ex: Human Revolution places players in the role of Adam Jensen, an ordinary man working as the head of security for Sarif Industries, a company specializing in biomechanical augmentations. These augmentations are the precursors to the nanotech implants seen in the earlier games of the series. The game retains the four core pillars that define the series: stealth, hacking, interaction, and combat. This allows players to approach almost every situation in multiple ways. For example, gaining entry to an exclusive club can be achieved by bribing the bouncer, killing him, sneaking in unnoticed, or hacking the door's security system.

The variety of playstyles is deeply tied to the augmentations the player chooses for Jensen. Since one character cannot master all areas of expertise, players must select their upgrades according to their preferred playstyle, whether it be stealth, combat, or technological manipulation.
