Disciples: Liberation is the fourth installment in the series that blends RPG elements with turn-based strategy, originally launched in 1999. Set in the dark, fantasy realm of Nevendaar, players take on the role of Avyanna, a character endowed with magical powers, tasked with the titular liberation of the land. To achieve this, she must uncover the realm's dark secrets, forge alliances with its ruling factions, and make decisions that will shape both the future of Nevendaar and her own destiny. The game's narrative can conclude in one of five different ways, each determined by the player's choices and actions.

The gameplay in Disciples: Liberation is presented from an isometric perspective. As players explore various regions of the vast land, including The Plains of Widows, Heurik, Grayleaf, and Whitelands, they undertake a variety of missions. Among the 270+ available quests are those that drive the story forward and side quests that offer additional content. Throughout the journey, players build relationships with Nevendaar's inhabitants and various factions, such as the human empire ruled by religious extremists or the undead led by a mad queen. A crucial element of the game is the development of Yllian’s Castle, which serves as both the player's base of operations and a safe haven. This requires resources that can be obtained through quests, exploration, alliances, or production buildings.

Avyanna can assume one of four distinct classes, and while she is a formidable character whose skills and equipment can be upgraded over time, she cannot liberate the land alone. Players must recruit companions and assemble an impressive army of over fifty types of units, each specializing in melee, ranged combat, or battle magic. Combat is turn-based, requiring players to utilize their tactical acumen and the strengths of their units effectively. In addition to regular enemy soldiers, players will also face powerful bosses, whose defeat necessitates the development of unique and effective strategies.
